Walking into a Fairy Tale – Bratislava and Slovakia

We left Budapest and Hungary today. It was quite rainy so it was a good choice to head towards Austria.  We transited through Slovakia again and had lunch in Bratislava. What a great town.

DSC00494

You cross a bridge with an unusual design that helped commemorate when UFOs helped to liberate the country from the Soviet Union in 1989 I believe.

When we crossed border from Hungary to Slovakia, there were no border checks, no security, no cameras…why don’t all the immigrants not take this route. What was actually scary was when we originally landed in Amsterdam, the immigration officer looked at our American passports, stamped them and did not even scan them into their tracking system. Seriously.

DSC00517

This city has a fun atmosphere, some great sites and some excellent restaurants.  It is full of stories and famous characters.  Mozart even spent some time here.

IMG_20160514_142755

There were a number of protests going on for some reason…not sure why.  The one that caught my eye was all the white shirts with spots of blood that were all over the city.

IMG_20160514_115305

It was a call to support and get more doctors for the medical needs in Syria. Did not expect that one here.

DSC00499

We had lunch and toured around the city.  There were many stories and connections that you not normally connect with Slovakia.  This is one of many – this one was for Robert Louis Stevenson.

Summary: this city is worth a visit.

The bus stops are the hottest spots in Hungary!

Many stop for the bathrooms

But most of the crowd load up on booze and candy at low prices to party!

Buda Called!

We hopped over the bridge to check out the other side of Budapest known by its gang name “Buda”.

DSC00486

We had visited this site previously in 2008, so we did not feel the need to spend a whole day on this side.  We did check out the refurbished church that was not open a number of years ago.

DSC00480

A lot of work has been put into the church in repairing and renovating the church that was heavily damaged in WWII.  Many original delicate pieces of stained glass were preserved during the war and were put back into place.

DSC00484

I do admit that the castle top in Buda was SWARMED by tourists.  It is a much more of a relaxed atmosphere than Pest, but it was shocking to see how much this location is becoming a tourist mob over the past 8 years.  Great views for taking pictures of the city though!

Ok – off to perform some wine tasting based on a recommendation from the Ritz-Carlton concierge. 🙂

A Pesty Afternoon in Budapest

We spent a little more time exploring some more on the Pest side of Budapest.

DSC00434

One of the places we got to visit was the second largest Jewish synagogue in the world.

DSC00443

It is a special sect of Judaism specific to Hungary.  It has a lot of history associated with the massacre and deportation of Jews by Adolf Eichmann of the Nazi regime as the Hungarian government was aligned with Germany in WWII.  If you look closely, you might be able to figure out what the special memorial is supposed to be.

DSC00449

It started to rain, but as Puget Sound veterans, we were prepared.  We walked down from our hotel to the chain bridge and the Danube to go visit the “Shoes Memorial”. It takes about 10 minutes to walk down a path along the Danube as you cannot get to it by car. It is a special memorial to remember the Jews that were lined up along the river, forced to take off their shoes, and then shot to fall into the river.

DSC00452

The next morning, we went to visit the Hungarian Parliament. We were able to get an appointment to see how the Hungarian government meets and works.

IMG_20160513_090013

The Parliament guards are changed every hour.  Very diligent.  When we visited the crown jewels inside the Parliament building, they had a hard time containing themselves when some other tourists kept trying to get closer than allowed and did not understand the Hungarian supervisors language.

IMG_20160513_090557

Take a look at this building in the middle. Why is it different?  It is built differently so it does not have risks of bombings, spy bugs built into the walls and also the NSA can install lots of collection antennas.

OK – we got kicked out of Pest.  We are headed to Buda!

The Pest of Budapest

We got into Budapest in the evening so we took a cruise along the Danube for a little local food, wine and music.

DSC00387

That was the famous chain bridge of course.

DSC00398

You can take some of the best photos of the buildings in Budapest along the river at night.

In the morning, we explored the Pest side of Budapest this morning…did you know that Budapest is actually two cities? 1/5 of all Hungarians live in Budapest.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budapest

DSC00420

We first headed to the Heroes Square which is full of historical kings and heroes in the embassy district that helped liberate Hungary from various empires (like the Ottomans) but it does not contain the heroes from the 1956 uprising or the overthrow of the communist government in the 90s.

DSC00418

Although we have been to Budapest in the past, we have never checked out the Opera.

DSC00410

An amazing historical building full of culture and style.

DSC00408

They have a different show/performance/music every night.  Today, they were setting up for Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew ballet.  Very tempting to get some last minute tickets…

And when we walked out, one of the local opera singers seemed to want to test the acoustics of the main corridors outside the main stage for us 🙂

Running in Budapest

We arrived in Budapest late yesterday and checked in the new Ritz-Carlton.  What an AMAZING hotel.

WP_20160511_001

They cater to runners, so we could not resist running first thing this morning 🙂

WP_20160511_002

We ran down by the Danube of course, it was tempting to run across the chain bridge, but I had another mission…

WP_20160511_004

Running around Margaret Island in middle of the Danube.  We saw hundreds of runners running around it last night…

WP_20160511_006

Why was it so popular?  It has a 5K running track built into the island!  (see the red rubber track material?) Brilliant!

WP_20160511_005

I did have to stop and try and take a quick pic of the storks that were nesting on the island when I saw them.  Sorry it was not a perfect picture, I was in running mode 🙂

Budapest

Great morning warm-up.  Off to check out more of the city!

Running around the world is always fun.  Some of my other favorite spots:

Travelling through Slovakia

Before we left Krakow, we did decide to be American tourists and have lunch at the Hard Rock Café.

IMG_20160510_113636

A little bit of a tradition for us…it was a great location on the square and a nice opportunity to observe everything while on the second floor.  I will admit the square is pretty much a tourist trap…

IMG_20160510_120503

Our waitress was actually Ukrainian and not Polish.  She left the Ukraine for work and to escape all the conflict there.  She had some stories and was not found of the pending civil war and conflict with Russia.

IMG_20160511_110124

On Wednesday, we headed south through Slovakia which was separated from the Czech Republic when the Warsaw pact countries all became democracies.  Check out the cool castle in the distance that was built into the mountain.  I wish we had time to check that place out.

IMG_20160511_123128

It seems like Slovakia could be a great place for some hiking and camping.

IMG_20160511_151740

It is definitely a highway full of truck stops catering to all the cars and trucks just passing through the country.

IMG_20160511_124838

Beautiful countryside, with flowing fields and ski mountains.  We stopped for some lunch in the middle of the mountains and enjoyed some local stew and local beer 🙂

Stay tuned, tomorrow, we will be talking about Budapest, Hungary!

Remembering Auschwitz

We kicked off the day in Krakow touring around some of the historical WWII sites before we headed out of town to visit Auschwitz.  This is an important historical story to tell and experience.

If it is your first time visiting the site, I recommend following @Auschwitz Museum to learn more and spread the education globally.

DSC00204

We first visited Schindlers factory which was actually not far from our hotel and across the river.

DSC00209

It was a pots and pans and later ammunition factory that has now been made into a museum,  These are pictures of some of the survivors.

DSC00214

We also toured some parts of the Jewish ghetto.  This is one remaining piece of the ghetto wall which was made to look like Jewish tombstones by the Nazis.

We then drove approximately 90 minutes out to the small town next to Auschwitz.  It was good to hear that 1.7 million people a year visit Auschwitz to learn and help understand that we should never forget and ensure this never happens again.

DSC00275

We actually ran into a massive traffic jam in the city next to Auschwitz – it is a very small village and still not that much larger than when it was during the war.

We then entered the gates.

DSC00279

The one thing I did not know is that there was significant destruction of Auschwitz prior to its liberation by the Red Army to try and hide it’s horrible secrets.  The Nazis did this to hide their secrets and hoped nobody would survive to tell the stories of what happened.

DSC00280

Auschwitz is a actually split between two locations. The original camp is quite small with brick two story buildings.

DSC00353

This is the gate that the trains arrived through.

DSC00290

And the SS officers made finger pointed decisions on who went to gas chambers immediately and who went to work camps.  Women and children all went to the gas chambers immediately.

DSC00363

The second at Birkenau was a massive camp with 320 wooden bunkers that were horrible to live and survive in. 500 people per bunker…

DSC00356

And the cremation facilities were hidden off into the forest in the distance.

DSC00315

In Auschwitz I, near bunker 11 was the starvation and suffocation cells…and the hardest part was the execution wall and between the buildings. It was very moving and we left some roses to honor and pay respect to those who were executed here.

DSC00341

Also in Auschwitz I, this is where the first gas chamber was created through terrible tests and experiments.

DSC00342

And the cremation burners built in the next door room. It was so hard to see how humans could have done these things.

DSC00294

In other bunkers, there were piles of shoes, eyeglasses, clothes, suitcases, tons, yet tons of human hair cut from women to make fabrics…and the remains of thousands of cyanide gas canisters that killed missions of people here.

This is just a small touch of the story and painful sites here.  Many things you cannot even take pictures of.  It is that horrible,  It is a difficult visit for everyone, but this is how we remember and ensure it never happens again.

If you would like to learn and see more, this is a highly recommended site that provides a view from the lens of the SS: https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/article/collections-highlight-auschwitz-through-the-lens-of-the-ss?series=18613

Please help, support and follow @Auschwitz Museum to spread the important education about this site and history.

Krakow Running Club

As you may have seen in my Warsaw blog post, Warsaw is all about bikers and we found that Krakow is where all the runners are. Yes, I know this picture has bikers, but trust me, the trail was full of runners tonight!

If not interested in running, check out my trip blog for the day we spent exploring Krakow.

WP_20160509_003

We did a nice Monday night run to stick with our Eastside Runners Monday running routine.  And we ran along the river, but here in Krakow, it is much larger than the Sammamish River…

WP_20160509_001

And it is full of swans and not so many ducks…

WP_20160509_004

Fun locations to run by like this research Nuclear reactor in Krakow…I wonder if it is from the former eastern block/Soviet days…

WP_20160509_005

Some nice wooded trails that has periodic exercise equipment every 100 meters to mix up your routine.

IMG_20160510_064040

Yes, I know some people are worried about Zombies in the wooded areas after watching Walking Dead, but we ate the anti-Zombie yogurt found here in Poland to be ready for that.

WP_20160509_006

Also have to love some of the local art painted along the bridges that you cross under.

krakow

Overall, great run tonight.  Krakow is a great city of activity and friendly atmosphere.  I can see now why it is popular for many European tourists.

Running around the world is always fun.  Some of my other favorite spots:

Headed to Krakow (Poland)

We trekked east to Krakow today.  A little rain, but nothing miserable.

IMG_20160509_121014

The waves of yellow rapeseeds (canola oil) was quite scenic as we drive for 5 hours.  Some fields were a mile long. Sorry for the window reflection.

IMG_20160509_131700

As we got close to Krakow, we could tell it was a lively town and not like Warsaw.  A 24×7 “Vegas Club” set the tone early. Not sure how much fun a 10×10 with no internal toilet could be a hot spot…

IMG_20160509_150952

Then, hotel choice.  This hostel was tempting…

DSC00199

But we decided to stay at the Sheraton along the river where all the runners hang out (stay tuned on that one!).

DSC00180

Krakow has more tourists for sure, but it was a definitely a fun city.  It was fortunate to not have been destroyed in WWII.  The market square was full of activities and is actually larger than the market square in Venice…but less pigeons.

DSC00184

Music, dancing and lots of people selling Chinese made tourist souvenirs…

DSC00195

We also walked through the oldest university in Poland where Copernicus studied…the architecture was quite unique.  Check out the water downspouts…almost reminded of Cathedral of Notre Dame…

Stay tuned for more fun, you can guess what is next!
