I guess I was overdue for an airline review and I recently had the opportunity to fly and rate Lufthansa this week – it was exciting to try since it has been more than 10 years since I last flew long distance on Lufthansa to or through Germany.

The start with the good: Lufthansa has the fastest and most efficient boarding even with a two aisle large jet. Phenomenal.

It was nice to get a little snack as soon as you sit versus waiting an hour to board and take off. A bag of nuts, but I must admit they actually tasted quite good with some champagne.

The bad: the seats are still the worst and least comfortable since I was in the military. I felt like I was sitting on a metal ejection seat with a 5mm seat cushion. You need the pillow to actually survive sitting for 10 hours.

Continuing with the bad… The entertainment system had the worst experience to actually browse options. Click OK click OK click OK with the basic controller…

And the headset? Do I need to say any more?

OK – the food. The appetizer and bread were quite tasty and fresh.

The main entree of beef something…it was SO dry, I had to drink water with every bite to actually chew the meat and swallow it.

On the way back from Frankfurt, it was a little better with the warm veggie stew…but the pretzel was almost stale.
I will share a loung review shortly, but if you would like to compare this flight with all my other Airline reviews, just check out this page and I think you may be surprised by some of the results: Airline Reviews | David Cross Travel Blog
On Feb 18 we flew from Miami to Frankfurt on a Lufthansa 747-8 in the upper deck , about 2 hours out of Frankfurt we entered an area of moderate turbulence ( seat belt sign was turned on ) and I noticed that both the passenger across from my wife ( who was in the aisle seat and was lying down flat ) , and a passenger sitting up one row forward did not have their seat belts on , as the cabin crew was also belted in and not moving around I waited until we were through the turbulence and then mentioned to the cabin crew that the passengers did not have their belts on , they completely ignored me but once on the ground repeatedly announced that all passengers must stay seated with their belts on , absurd priority compared to the dangers of not being belted in during turbulence then on the next leg to Prague in the A 319 the crew clearly announced the obligation to have belts on at all times.
This is not the first time I have seen this on Lufthansa on transatlantic flights , in fact I have seen this on almost every transatlantic flight , complete complacency about seat belts , really bad risk management
If you look at the Lufthansa web site ( under the general conditions of carriage ) they clearly state that seat belts must be on at all times ( ie not just turbulence )
p.s I am an Airline Transport pilot with over 45 year flying experience , I have been in sever turbulence twice in 45 years , so very rare , but when it happens the seat belts are the difference between juts and unpleasant experience for passengers and getting seriously injured or even killed
